He coined “truthiness” and the “Colbert bump;” his triumphs over the human lexicon now also include the name of a species of spiders, Aptostichus stephencolberti.

The new spider species was discovered by East Carolina University biologist Jason Bond, who specializes in spiders and millipedes.  Colbert demanded that he was named after the spider, after finding out that Bond had previously named another spider after Neil Young.  The spider will be called the Aptostichus stephencolberti, with a silent t.  It (he? she?) will be appearing on the Colbert Report this coming Wednesday.  First, a portrait hanging in between bathrooms at the Smithsonian – now, this. Stephen sure has a lot going for him.
